Loiri - Porto San Paolo

The towns of Loiri and Porto San Paolo have been inhabited by different civilizations.
The nuraghi, Roman ruins, remains from the period of the Marine Republics and typical Gallurese stazzi all contribute to the historical record of the towns.
A fishing community coming from the island of Ponza colonized the coast, establishing the small village of Porto San Paolo. Economic development and the recent boom in tourism have transformed this town into a lively coastal resort. The town of Loiri has ancient origins.
During the Roman period, it was an important junction on the Olbia – Karalis road; the harbor was located in present-day Porto San Paolo.
During the Medieval period, many small centers developed in the area, all built around a church (for example the Church of Santa Giusta).
In the last century, all of this area has been affected by the economic and demographic explosion resulting from increased tourism.
The Protected Marine Area aims to assist the Loiri – Porto San Paolo Municipality with the creation and implementation of a sustainable coastal management plan, guaranteeing sustainable territorial development.
