San Teodoro

This town dates back to the end of the 17th Century and was built around the church dedicated to Teodoro, a soldier of the Eastern Empire who was martyred during the persecutions of Diocletian.

There is very little historical evidence of human settlement in the area before this period. During the Middle Ages, the Gallura region suffered from a demographic slump, due to harsh historic conditions.
The rebirth of San Teodoro started between the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century, when social and economic conditions improved after being damaged by the Stazzi.
The agricultural aspect of the Gallurese culture strongly characterizes the area of San Teodoro which, even today, recalls memories of an ancient civilization due to the presence of typical peasant houses that can be found throughout the area.
The entire town of San Teodoro is characterized by a large presence of seasonal tourism during Spring and Summer months.
During Autumn and Winter months, however, the area around the pond of San Teodoro (which is also of Communal Interest) offers an interesting show to all visitors that are interested in learning about the flora and fauna of the territory.
For this reason, the Tavolara – Punta Coda Cavallo Protected Marine Area considers the town of San Teodoro a strategic area for promoting sustainable development, capable of offering a visit that is especially mindful of envrionmental values and their conservation.
