The NGO SMILO - Small Islands Organization, based in France, is an international cooperation programme that aims to support islands with less than 150 km² towards sustainable management of their land and resources through an approach based on five priority sectoral themes: waste management, energy, water and sewage, biodiversity and ecosystems, landscapes and heritage. The programme is based on a certification process that rewards the islands' good practices with the Sustainable Island label. In 2019 the island of Tavolara and five other small islands passed the first stage of the certification process and more than thirty are members of the network. They are located in West Africa, Indian Ocean, Europe and the Mediterranean.
