San Teodoro

San Teodoro

The village developed at the end of the 17th century, around the church dedicated to Theodore, a Roman soldier of the East, martyr of Diocletian's persecution. Before this period, the historical testimonies describe the Teodoro territory as deserted and scarcely populated. During the Middle Ages, the whole Gallura region experienced a demographic collapse due to the difficulties and harshness of the historical period.

The rebirth of San Teodoro began between the end of 1600 and the first half of 1700, when the socio-economic fabric, dispersed in the surrounding countryside with the civilization of stazzi, was reconstituted. The agro-pastoral life of Gallura's culture has strongly characterized the area of San Teodoro that, still today, represents part of the memory of an ancient civilization, with the relevant presence of typical houses, distributed in the countryside of its municipal territory. The whole municipality of San Teodoro is characterized by a strong seasonal tourist presence concentrated in the spring and summer.

During the autumn and winter seasons the pond of San Teodoro, which is also a Site of Community Interest, offers a fascinating spectacle to visitors curious to know the flora and fauna of the territory. For these reasons, the Protected Marine Area of Tavolara - Punta Coda Cavallo considers the municipality of San Teodoro a strategic point to promote a model of sustainable development, capable of a tourist offer more attentive to environmental values and their conservation.
